Adventures with Josh

Adventures with Josh and some without.

A Hoosier in Paris

As if an American in Paris wasn't obtuse enough...now we will have a Hoosier in Paris.

We have stumbled upon an exciting opportunity.  Josh loves Drupal.  We went to Washington D.C. so he could meet other Drupaler's that speak his nerd language.  He liked it so much that he thought...Paris....why not?  So he filled out information for a scholarship and he won!

The first question....should we go?  Of course.  We are young, no kids, have supportive families to watch after our 3 cats, and have a credit card.

The reality....Drupalcon starts in less than 40 days...33 I think.  We have no passports, have never traveled internationally, have only taken a few years of French in high school, and Josh gets lost driving home sometimes.  How are we to manage the foreign world of Paris.

Thus "A Hoosier in Paris" is born.

I'm as outsider as they come for this adventure.  I don't speak French and I don't speak Drupal, PHP, JavaScript...whatever.  But I'm all about this Drupal thing...if we keep getting to see the world.

More to come...

I just got back from Paris. It is beyond lovely. You have one advantage over Josh - he has to go to Drupalcon and you don't. I am a Drupaler myself, and I love Drupalcon to death, but Paris is Paris and Drupal will always be there when I get home.

There will also be many many many stranded Drupal spouses to socialize with and they're all great. The train system is easy to understand, goes everywhere, and you'll be pretty surprised how far your couple years of high school French will take you (I had the same deal.) Check out a couple basic French podcasts before you go and get a good guidebook (I liked the Rick Steves one myself.)

Have an amazing trip!

Yeah,
there is no other option than enjoying Paris. Be prepared that most Parisiennes are pretty cold to foreigners killing their language but that can be ignored. Buy a city map and make sure to discover a lot by foot.
If you want to hit the Louvre be early and plan a lot of time. In addition you should decide on which parts of the exhibition you can quit because seeing everything is just too much. If Louvre is too big or you like exhibitions I really can advise to visit the Musee d'Orsay. I visit it everytime I am in Paris because of the wealth of great, great art.

Enjoy!

It's a jungle out there...
But you'll love it. You'll be meeting enthusiastic Drupaleros from all over the world, and these are the friendliest people you can ever expect to meet, srsly.
My first DrupalCon was in Barcelona, Spain, and it was incredible how warm the atmosphere was, how much I learned, how much I realized I had learned, and how inspiring the alive-with energy and enthusiastic atmosphere was.
All around you people talking (in English) about everything under the sun you could fit into the Drupalicon's fat little blue head.
Plus, who knows what Dries will be announcing this time...
Hava a ball!
I wish I could say I look forward to meeting you there, but... I'm not going: I can't speak French :|
